Bremhill

Bremhill is a village and parish about two and a half miles northwest of Calne, four and a half miles east of Chippenham. The parish included Spirthill and Titherton Kelloways (Kelways), nearby tythings where some of the people involved in this case lived. According to the bill of complaint, the defendants began their libellous ridicule of John Harris, Michael Robbins (his son-in-law), and his wife Elizabeth near the end of December 1618 and pursued their malicious campaign for almost three weeks, reading, singing, and dispersing at various places where many people would gather the mocking verses copied into the evidence. Only one answer to the charges, dated 23 April 1619, is extant.
